Volunteering and training opportunities

Volunteer with the Findhorn Watershed Initiative and make your contribution towards ecosystem restoration from source to sea in our home watershed.

Whether you’re interested in planting trees, monitoring freshwater invertebrates, or helping to map the seagrass of Findhorn Bay; our volunteer programme includes adhoc and regular opportunities to gain hands-on experience in conservation and river stewardship, meet likeminded new people, and give back to the places we love.

Current Opportunities:

  • Citizen Science: Invertebrate monitoring

Help us monitor the health of the river catchment through fresh water invertebrate surveys.

With training provided by BugLife through their Guardians of Our Rivers Initiative, volunteers in the upper and lower catchment of the River Findhorn meet monthly in Tomatin and Forres to identify and monitor the different species of invertebrates that exist within our waterways, spot early warning signs of habitats in crisis, and record findings to environmental agencies.

  • Citizen Science: Seagrass surveys

Seagrass is an amazing but lesser-known tidal and sub-tidal habitat which absorbs carbon, supports biodiversity, and helps to protect our coastlines from erosion.

Working in collaboration with Moray Ocean Community, we are seeking volunteers to help us map the seagrass meadows that exist both off shore in Burghead Bay and within the intertidal mud flats of Findhorn Bay, so that we can better understand the status of this vital marine habitat and help enhance it where needed.

  • Tree planting and seedling surveys

A big part of our vision for the Findhorn Watershed Initiative is the restoration and regeneration of native riparian woodland along the riverbanks of the main River Findhorn and its tributaries.

From time to time we have opportunities for volunteers to help with tree planting and/or with taking part in surveys to monitor the health of woodlands within the watershed area, in partnership with the landholdings along the rivers.
