Role Description

The Findhorn, Nairn, and Lossie Rivers Trust is recruiting for a new Communications Officer to support us with the development of the Findhorn Watershed Initiative. This exciting new role will be central to bringing to life all of the work undertaken to date and what we achieve over the months ahead in a meaningful and compelling way; informing and inspiring our stakeholders to engage with the FWI and play their vital roles in nature recovery and connection in the River Findhorn catchment area. Responsibilities for the role will include;

• Building on existing groundwork to date to develop and implement the FWI communications and social media strategy, refining tailored approaches for each target audience

• Helping with the expansion of the FWI website (currently hosted on Squarespace) and activation of our social media channels (@FindhornWatershed)

• Liaising with FWI team members and project partners to draw out stories to share

• Telling the story of FWI as it unfolds via social media, our newsletters, and regular blog content on the website, as well as ArcGIS Storymaps (software training provided)

• Designing digital and printed materials for key presentations, reports, events etc, including slidedecks, fliers, posters, printed publications, banners, etc

• Planning and writing press releases that promote and communicate our ambitions and achievements, as well as preparing responses to media enquiries

• Helping organise and attend stakeholder and community engagement events

• Assisting with fulfilling project and funder reporting requirements, including tracking stakeholder engagement

• Ensuring compliance with legal requirements (IP, GDPR, etc.)

• Working with project partners and contributors to coordinate coherent and compelling communications about FWI between multiple organisations

• Fostering relationships with external photographers, videographers, designers, and other content creators as necessary to produce high-quality visual communication assets

• Staying abrest of commentary and guidance related to the emerging nature restoration field in the Scottish Highlands so that FWI’s communications are as pertinent and perceptive as possible

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Essential:

• Graduate qualification in relevant discipline and/or equivalent experience

• Experience leading successful digital communications campaigns

• Exceptional copy writing skills and an eye for design

• Skilled with visual media creation and design software

• Familiarity with using Squarespace, Mailchimp, Instagram, Twitter, and Linkedin for executing communications

• Excellent organisational, time management, and prioritisation skills, with the ability to take initiative and work without close supervision where required

• Ability to work well both individually and as part of our small team

Key Liaisons

The Findhorn Watershed Initiative Communications Officer role will report directly to the FWI Strategy Lead. This newly created role sits within a small team at FNLRT and so you will also work closely with the FWI Project Officer, FNLRT Administrator and FNLRT Director.

The role will also involve liaising with project partners to deliver a coordinated communications strategy, as well as our funders in order to fulfil their project communications requirements.

The role may require supporting volunteers and student placements at different times.

The Findhorn, Nairn and Lossie Rivers Trust (FNLRT) promotes sustainable management of river resources and fish populations through research, restoration and education. To achieve this, the Trust works closely with the District Salmon Fishery Boards for each river, and other relevant organisations. A charity and company limited by guarantee, the Trust relies on grants, donations and fundraising to implement projects.

During 2022, in response to river temperature modelling undertaken by Marine Scotland Science as part of the Scottish River Temperature Network (SRTMN) highlighting the Upper Catchments of the Findhorn, Nairn, and Lossie rivers as particularly vulnerable to warming under climate change conditions, and in line with the Trust’s 2021-26 Management Plan; FNLRT instigated The Findhorn Watershed Initiative (FWI). Building on the organisation’s experience, expertise, and reputation as a trusted local environmental conservation intermediary, and the success of the ‘SISI’ invasive non-native species control project, we were able to secure significant funding to support the development of the FWI.

Encompassing a wide range of ecosystems, and a mosaic of different land uses, The Findhorn Watershed Initiative (FWI) is a long term, integrated, landscape-scale vision for ecological restoration across 1300km2 of the Scottish Highlands. From the source to the sea of the River Findhorn, our aim is to foster a broad range of ecological, social, cultural, and economic benefits, and we hope to expand this approach to encompass the Nairn and Lossie rivers in time.

The Findhorn Watershed Initiative seeks to bring together the watershed’s communities, landowners, businesses, farmers, foresters, land managers, local authorities, and educational institutions to work in collaboration at a large scale to sequester carbon, restore habitat, and mitigate the impacts of the twin crises of climate breakdown and biodiversity collapse for future generations.

The project has a strong initial focus on the establishment of a network of native riparian and catchment woodlands, or ‘Riverwoods’, along the River Findhorn and its tributaries, as well as supporting further peatland restoration. The aim of the initiative is to restore the river ecosystem with an emphasis on turning round the fortunes of the iconic wild Atlantic salmon.

Job Description:

To help us with the development of the Findhorn Watershed Initiative, The Findhorn, Nairn, and Lossie Rivers Trust is recruiting for a new Project Officer. This exciting new role will be taking a lead in our efforts to tackle the climate and biodiversity emergencies, and will involve working directly with landowners and land managers to develop and implement riparian woodland and other restoration schemes. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of scoping out large-scale restoration projects, bringing these schemes to life, and managing contractors throughout the delivery process. They will be responsible for the following;

• Engaging land managers in woodland creation and other ecological restoration works that fit in with their estate management plan and/or farming or forestry business

• Scoping out and designing woods taking into account topography, fencing requirements, species mixes, soil suitability, deer management, etc.

• Translating these plans into GIS mapping datasets

• Applying to appropriate grant schemes includes Woodland Grant Scheme, carbon brokering, AECS, Nature Restoration Fund, Water Environment Fund etc.

• Ensuring all consents are secured including designated site, CAR, planning etc.

• Drawing up tender documents and ensuring a transparent procurement process

• Liaison with and overseeing delivery contractors, and ensuring quality control on site

• Post implementation monitoring and ensuring all conditions have been met

This newly created role sits within a small team at FNLRT and you will work closely with both the FWI Strategy Lead and FNLRT Director, reporting to the FNLRT Director. The Project Officer may also support volunteers and interns at different times.

Essential Skills

• Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills, comfortable with a range of different stakeholder groups including land managers, agencies, organisations, contractors and suppliers

• Experience in large-scale project management with a proven ability to plan, report and work to deadlines,

• A good understanding of land management, farming and forestry practices, in particular for upland and riparian areas,

• An understanding of current funding mechanisms for ecological restoration projects and experience in preparing and submitting funding applications,

• A degree, or equivalent in a land management/ environmental management/ agriculture/ forestry/ nature conservation discipline

• A full clean UK driving license

Desirable Skills

• Experience in working with communities and volunteers

• Knowledge of forestry grant schemes

• Knowledge of riparian woodland and upland restoration impacts on the wider ecology,

• Experience of creating and managing GIS datasets; - particularly ArcGIS

Main responsibilities:
The successful candidate will receive training in;

• A variety of survey techniques for monitoring, fish, invertebrates, river habitat, temperature and flow, remnant forest habitat, conducting drone surveys and aerial photography, etc.

• Compiling, analysing and mapping the survey data.

You will also gain experience in,

• Collecting data in a remote location,

• Collaborating with small teams,

• Working with specialist survey teams,

• Developing baseline surveys and establishing long term monitoring systems,

Scope of work –

Phase 1: To develop an ESRI ArcGIS to provide map based outputs to illustrate and interpret survey data collected from the Upper River Findhorn catchment.

Phase 2: To expand the ESRI ArcGIS and develop a fully functional GIS for the Findhorn Nairn and Lossie Rivers Trust (FNLRT) and Findhorn Watershed Initiative (FWI), utilizing a wide range of open source and FNLRT datasets.

Outputs –

Phase 1: Upper Findhorn Catchment data mapping & compilation:

• Establish GIS mapping facility using ESRI ArcGIS system

• Carry out a thorough search of all relevant data sources and compile a schedule of spatial datasets relevant to the Upper Findhorn River Catchment

• Carry out a data mapping exercise within FNLRT to identify all internal relevant spatial datasets for the Upper Findhorn River Catchment

• In consultation with FNLRT finalise the schedule of relevant datasets then source and compile said datasets (including full meta-data, where available) into an offline geodatabase for display in desktop ArcGIS mapping software

• Compile new survey data sets (aerial photograph, remnant native woodland, and others)

• Map areas where riparian woodland would provide the best river shading potential, in coordination with Riparian Woodland Consultant

• Identify datasets relevant to Forestry Plan applications and create ArcGIS map template including relevant styled datasets that FNLRT can use to create Forestry Plan applications

• Provide training to FNLRT staff on using the mapping templates

• Provide additional analysis and outputs as directed

Phase 2: ESRI ArcGIS Online Data Portal Development for the full FNLRT area:

• Using the FNLRT 'ArcGIS Enterprise Site' set up an 'ArcGIS Hub Data Portal' where users search for, view, and download the data sets identified during the data mapping exercise

• Identify and collate all relevant datasets across the Findhorn, Nairn, and Lossie catchments

• Style key datasets and configure as layers for display in an ArcGIS Hub web map application to allow non-specialists users to view the FNLRT data online

• Develop an ArcGIS StoryMap in collaboration with the Findhorn Watershed Initiative staff to display the FNLRT spatial data alongside multimedia and text in an accessible and informative manner

TENDER D: Riparian Woodland Consultancy

Scope of work –

The original inception of the Findhorn Watershed Initiative (FWI) was inspired by the Scotland River Temperature Monitoring Network (SRTMN) data which identifies the Upper River Findhorn catchment as a priority area for the creation of riparian shading, in order to mitigate rising river temperatures due to climate breakdown.

The first phase of the Findhorn Watershed Initiative has a strong focus on enabling the establishment of a network of native riparian and catchment woodlands (or ‘riverwoods’) along the Upper River Findhorn and its tributaries to provide river shade and nutrients. In order to best understand and prioritise our efforts, the FNLRT requires further information about what woodland currently exists, its current status, and potential for restoration and regeneration. This information may be gathered by ground survey, visual interpretation of aerial imagery, satellite image analysis, soil, aspect, and other types of analysis – the FNLRT is open to proposals from the bidder as to the most efficient and informative approach.

This contract would form the first phase of engagement in what FNLRT hopes would be a long term relationship of woodland consultancy; from woodland plan design and development through to implementation on the ground.

Outputs –

• Mapping of priority riparian woodland restoration areas in the Upper Findhorn catchment area, in coordination with GIS contractor

• Analysis of existing estate woodland management plans and synthesizing into coordinated catchment-scale approach

• Survey of existing remnant woodland, identification, understanding of current status, data gathering, and mapping of any potential seed source

• Provide a better understand as to natural woodland regeneration potential, in coordination with Herbivore Management Consultant

• Advice on appropriate species for planting

Outputs –

• Design and conduct a catchment wide survey for FWPM, prioritising the upper catchment

• Provide training to FNLRT/FDSFB staff such that they can assist with the survey

• Provide georeferenced data on any FWPM found

• Mapping of data, including potential ‘sanctuary habitat’, using ESRI ArcGIS

• Full report and recommendations based on the survey findings

Help the FNLRT to establish an invertebrate monitoring strategy as a metric to track riparian change and biodiversity uplift over time. The monitoring programme should consider instream aquatic invertebrate populations and terrestrial invertebrates which are present within the riparian zone and may enter the river.

Outputs –

• Design an invertebrate sampling strategy which will provide baseline data and can be maintained at regular intervals over a long time period to monitor riparian change and track biodiversity change as riparian woodland increases

• Conduct upper catchment invertebrate baseline survey

• Identify other invertebrate sample data (SEPA etc) and examine incorporating these datasets into a monitoring programme

• Review new approaches and techniques (eDNA etc)

• Consider how to incorporate Citizen Science approaches

TENDER J: Nature Finance Advisory Services

Scope of work –

To work with Findhorn Watershed Initiative (FWI) Strategy Lead, with support of steering group members, to undertake the process outlined in the Green Finance Institute’s Investment Readiness Toolkit (or similar, as recommended) to prepare the project to enable high-integrity, high-impact investment in nature-based solutions in the River Findhorn catchment, in a way which also takes into account opportunities for increasing community prosperity. To provide guidance and oversight based on previous experience of securing natural capital investment for nature-recovery projects.

Outputs –

• Support appraisal of the Findhorn watershed for investment readiness opportunities, including both assets and enterprises

• Support identification, approaching of, and pricing negotiation with sellers, buyers, and investors

• Support development of business case, finance model, governance structure, and legal contracts

• Oversee process of integrating all information gathered and developed into an investment pitchdeck and nature finance strategy for the project

Timeframes – 50% of the contract value to be invoiced upfront before 31 March 2023, 50% to be invoiced by 31 May 2023.

The Findhorn Watershed Initiative is delighted to be working in partnership with Wild Things, a Findhorn watershed-based award-winning environmental education charity, to create this new and exciting role, hosted and employed by Wild Things, which aims to support community engagement with the project, working with people of all ages along the Findhorn River catchment to restore, protect, learn about and experience one of Scotland’s wildest and most beautiful rivers.

The Findhorn, Nairn and Lossie Rivers Trust is delighted to be partnering with Findhorn Bay Arts to deliver a programme of creative and cultural engagements in the lower River Findhorn catchment area.

Hours: Part-time / 24 hours / anticipated average 3 days per week including evenings and weekends when required.

Term: This is a fixed term contract for 6-months from October 2023 (exact date TBC) to 31st March 2024.

Salary: £28-32k pro-rata.

Note: We are open to job-share/collaborative applications – where the applicants’ skills are complementary to each other in order to fulfil the role as per the spec.
